Cultural Activities Team offers an ‘embarrassment of riches’

Over the summer, Villagers had the opportunity to attend many truly exceptional cultural events. An embarrassment of riches, if you will.

One group went to the ArtCenter to see the powerful work of photographer and activist Kwame Brathwaite. Kwame’s art has shed a light on the civil rights, the Black Arts and Black Power movements since the 1950s.

A group journeyed to A Noise Within to enjoy George Bernard Shaw’s high-flying comedy “Misalliance.”

And for just $10, Villagers could attend the L.A. Opera’s production of the Puccini masterpiece “Turandot” at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

And that’s just a small sampling of this summer’s cultural offerings. If you missed them, not to worry. Every month the Pasadena Village calendar is dotted with turquoise-colored listings.

That color indicates the Cultural Activities Team’s offerings. The team is made up of a group of Villagers who enjoy sampling a variety of cultural resources and enjoy sharing these experiences with other Village members. Some members have niche areas. Jane Hufnagel, for example, enjoys museums. Jeff Gutstadt likes opera. Jim Hendrick is interested in art, poetry and music.

Karen Bagnard initiated two very popular, ongoing art-related programs: the in-office art exhibits and receptions, and Schmoozendoodle, a relaxed art and socializing exercise anyone can enjoy. And recently she and Gina Frierman-Hunt added a new support group for Village members who create visual art.

As chairperson, LuCinda Haagenson also keeps an eye out for local cultural events — museums, concerts and theater, as well as other programs they think might appeal to Villagers

Have an idea for a program? The team wants to know. Members of Pasadena Village can come to a meeting — the third Tuesday of every month — or reach out to Karen or LuCinda directly with their suggestion. Better yet, Village members are welcome to join the team. The time commitment is minimal; the likelihood of fun, new friendships and new ideas is guaranteed. Either way, you will not be expected to plan and organize an event by yourself. Someone on the team will be available, and happy, to partner with you.
