Current, Upcoming Events
By Richard MyersPosted: 07/04/2024
Our next meeting will be on , July 5th at 10AM. The last week has been very eventful and we will be discussing the impact of these events on the racial environment in this country. The meeting will take place on our usual link which is emailed in advance of our usual meeting.
Our discussion groups on Civil Rights is continuing with another meeting on July 23rd, referring to CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT DISCUSSION: 1964 FREEDOM SUMMER. Jim Hendrick has established a series of events which we will announce here as each date approaches. These meetings are not on zoom, but are in person. They are member-only events that are limited in size due to the space limitations. Members can register for this July 23 event at Civil Rights Movement Discussion
Our other July meeting, coming up on July 19 at 12PM will be a visit with Alma Stokes. This promises to be a very engaging and informative visit. Many of our Villagers have met and worked with Alma over the years, as their children attended Pasadena schools.
Alma Stokes is a prominent figure in race relations from Pasadena, California. Known for her tireless advocacy and community work, she has dedicated much of her life to improving racial harmony and equality in her city. Born and raised in Pasadena, Alma witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by communities of color, which fueled her passion for social justice. She became actively involved in various civil rights organizations.
Alma Stokes has been recognized for her extensive contributions to education and community service in Pasadena. She has received numerous awards throughout her career, including the Pasadena Educational Foundation's highest honor, the Exemplary Service Award, which acknowledges her 30-year career as an educator and her extensive volunteer work supporting the well-being and education of young people in the community. Additionally, she has been acknowledged for her work with various organizations, such as the Pasadena NAACP, Friends in Deed, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and many others. Notably, she was recently recognized by Young and Healthy with her own fund, the Alma Stokes Healing Fund, for her significant contributions.
Alma Stokes has also been interviewed on the "The Power of One" which is a podcast by Brian Biery is dedicated to highlighting individuals who make significant positive impacts within their communities. Each episode focuses on a person who has initiated change, illustrating how one person's actions can contribute to broader social improvements. Her interview can be watched by clicking on her name.
