THE 1619 PROJECT
Connected Through Slavery,
A Black Woman and a White Woman
Discover Their Path and Each Other
Pasadena Village’s 1619 Project Discussion Group invites you to hear from two special guests, Dr. Betty Kilby Fisher Baldwin and Phoebe Kilby who will introduce their book, “Cousins.” This is the story of a black family and a white family, descended from the same slave holder. Two women from these families met one another, bonded with each other, and decided to share their story. Please join us for what promises to be another engaging exploration of the deep racial divide that we are experiencing in our country.
The 1619 Project group was inspired by the New York Times issue dated August 2019. This group engages in discussions centered around race in America, how we got to where we are, and what we can do to change it. Our goal is to have a safe place to talk about the history of racism in America, to understand its origins and its residual impact.
This group explores the ideas presented in the 1619 Project but not to follow it's teaching curriculum. This is a discussion group not intended as a teaching class. We often suggest articles that have been recommended to us only to initiate discussion, but homework is never required to participate in the discussion. Everybody can engage in the discussions by sharing what they learn from the news as well as what they have experienced in their lives.
Meetings are held twice a month, on the 1st and 3rd Fridays. The first Friday meets at 10:00am-11:30am and the third at 12:00noon - 1:30pm. You are invited to join us to share your views, and to learn how members of the community experience racism in their own lives. Members from other villages are always welcomed!
Discussions from previous meetings can be found in the "1619 Project Discussion" blog.
